Unusually Me

Duration:          20 – 30 minutes

Group Size:       Section or Platoon Level

Resources:       Writing paper, pen & a helmet/cap

Purpose:      To get the team to know each other better.

Overview:    To share with everyone in the team something unique or unusual about themselves.

Conduct:

  1. Form a circle.
  2. Each person writes down something unique or unusual about himself (e.g. hobby, character trait) on a piece of paper, which is placed into the helmet.
  3. The facilitator draws out each piece of paper and reads out what is written. The team tries to guess who the individual 

Debrief Questions:

No debrief necessary, although it might be useful for the commander to take note of pairs or groups who seem to know each other quite well.

Getting to Know You

2 Truths, 1 Lie

Duration:           20 – 30 minutes

Group Size:         Section Level

Resources:         Writing paper & pen

Purpose:          To get the team to touch base with each other at the start of the ICT.

Overview:        To share new information about each member of the team since the previous ICT, by sharing 2 true items & 1 untrue item, without making the lie too obvious.

Conduct:

  1. Form a circle.
  2. Each person is to think about TWO new things/events that have happened to him since the previous ICT and write these down.
  3. Each person is also to come up with ONE thing or event that did not happen, but is probable (this is the lie).
  4. Each person is to, in turn, share the 2 truths and 1 lie (not necessarily in that order) with the group.
  5. Members of the group will be required to guess which statement is the lie.
  6. Once the group has reached a consensus, the person who is sharing will reveal which statement is the lie (elaborations on any/all the statements is encouraged to help all the men get to know each other better)

Debrief Questions:No debrief necessary, although it might be useful for the commander to take note of pairs or groups who seem to know each other quite well.

Wishful Thinking

Duration:          15 minutes

Group Size:       Section Level

Resources:       1 die

Purpose:     To uncover each other’s values/ priorities/ thinking, as part of getting to know each other better.

Overview:    To spontaneously come up with quirky responses to unlikely questions.

Conduct:

  1. Form a circle.
  2. Get each participant to throw a die & respond to the statement that corresponds to number on the die.
  3. If I were OC for this ICT, I would ….
  4. One fantasy I have is ….
  5. If I have 24 hours left to live, I would ….
  6. TWO things I would love to have if I get stranded on a deserted island ….
  7. If I had superhero powers, I would like to have the power ….
  8. My dream date would be ….

It is also possible to craft other statements that might appeal to the men.

Singapore Map

Duration:          30 minutes

Group Size:       2 or more Sections or Platoon Level

Resources:       Chalk, masking tape or rope

Purpose:      To get team members to know each other better by sharing details about their lives.

Overview:    To get the team to share personal details by moving around to different locations within a ‘map’ of Singapore.

Conduct:

  1. Using a rough ‘map’ of Singapore marked on the floor, using chalk, masking tape or joined toggle ropes, ask participants to stand where they live. 
  2. Get them to say “hello” to their neighbours.
  3. Facilitate 2 – 3 rounds of sharing (get the participants to move to the location on the map):
  4. where they like to hang-out for leisure, what they do for leisure and how often, etc. 
  5. where their favorite eating place is, what their favorite food is, where it is, why they like it, how they discovered it, etc. 
  6. places of significance to them (e.g. proposed to wife, first date, first home, etc.)
  7. To wrap-up, encourage them to use this new information by meeting up with their neighbors or planning group outings for leisure or makan.

Debrief Questions:

Wallet Game

Duration: 15 minutes

Group Size: Section Level

Resources: NIL

Purpose: To break the ice and get to know each other on a more personal level.

Overview: To share 3 personal things about yourself with the rest of the team.

Conduct:

  1. The team sits in a circle.
  2. Facilitator explains the purpose of the activity.
  3. Facilitator asks each team member to look through their wallet and select 3 items that are of personal significance to them (e.g. membership cards, personal photos, mementoes, receipts to significant purchases) matching the following criteria:
    • Something that is most representative of you.
    • Something that is most precious or valuable to you.
    • Something that is most memorable for you.
  4. Going round the circle, each member shares with the group what the items are and why they are significant.
