Leaders play a critical role in ensuring that a unit is cohesive and united. A cohesive unit has a strong sense of belonging, shares a common set of values and strives towards a common purpose, enabling it to fight more effectively. Unit cohesion is thus an important combat motivation factor during operations. We have a programme in place at the Battalion and Company command team levels that aims to systematically enhance cohesion in our NS units.
To build cohesion in a unit, a facilitative style of leadership is effective in fostering engagement and inspiring commitment. It is a style of leadership that can complement other styles of leadership (e.g. a directive style) when applied in the appropriate situation. People are more likely to commit to activities when they feel a sense of influence and ownership. The Leadership for Cohesion (LFC) Guidebook provides tips on facilitative leadership.
At its core, this Guidebook is a tool for commanders at all levels in to conduct activities that build teamwork and cohesion amongst the men. These activities are intentional and designed to help the commander draw out lessons from the activities, leading the men to internalize the principles of team work, strengthening their commitment to the team and its mission.
We hope this Guidebook will inspire you to think about the key roles of a leader. Though a typical ICT programme is a full one, the challenge for you is to create opportunities to conduct the activities found in this Guidebook. Be ready to modify and tailor the suggested activities according to your needs. Beyond the obvious goals of mission accomplishment, emphasis should also be placed on team building and team learning – so that our NSmen can have a positive NS experience and become fully committed to their role in defending Singapore.
We wish you every success in building strong and effective teams.
